Poached Pears with Warm Chocolate Sauce

🛒Ingredients (Grocery List)

  • 3/4 cup Sugar

  • 4 large or 8 small firm Pears, peeled, halved lengthwise, and cored

  • 1/2 Lemon

  • 1/4-pound bittersweet Chocolate, finely chopped

  • 1 tbsp unsalted Butter

🍴Serves: 4

⏰Prep Time: 10 min

⏱️Cook Time: 30 min

❄️Chilling Time: 3 hours

🥣Instructions

1. In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of water with the Sugar. Place over medium-low heat and cook until large bubbles form. Immediately remove the pan from the heat. Rub the Pear halves with the Lemon to discourage browning. Add the Pears to the Sugar syrup and cook over medium heat until tender, 15 to 25 minutes. Let the Pears cool slightly in the syrup, then refrigerate until cold, 2 to 3 hours.

2. If needed, remove the pears from the poaching liquid and simmer the liquid until it thickens slightly.

3. In a medium saucepan, melt the Chocolate with the Butter over low heat. Stir with a wooden spoon until smooth. Stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons of the Pear poaching liquid.

4. Spoon the Pears into dessert bowls, pour the warm Chocolate sauce over the top, and serve.

💡Tips

  • If you are in a rush, store-bought Pears in syrup are also very good. Then you will only have the Chocolate sauce to make, and the whole recipe will take you barely 10 minutes. When you have a day off, you can poach the Pears in syrup yourself, then they will be ready to serve when you are busy.

  • Select Pears that are still firm. They can take more or less time to cook until tender depending on the variety and ripeness.

  • I probably don’t need to tell you how delicious this is with Vanilla Ice Cream and Whipped Cream.
